CSI and Real Life

Who doesn't love a good forensic science tv show like CSI? All that action and crime solving gets me all excited. I just can't stop watching.

How much of that really translate into real life though?

Well let's see!

Processing DNA

CSI: Instant

Real Life: A few weeks to several months

Tight-Knit Group of Investigators

CSI: Well-trained investigators work closely together.

Real Life: Well-trained investigators work closely together, sometimes discussing cases over meals.

Finding Usable Evidence at The Crime Scene

CSI: 100%

Real Life: 5% to 10%

Forensic Tests Conclusive

CSI: 100%

Real Life: 30%

How Many People To Process DNA Samples

CSI: 1 person

Real Life: 2 to 10 people

How Big Is C.O.D.I.S.

CSI: Total U.S. Population (312 Million People)

Real Life: 3.3 Million DNA samples

Do CSI Really Drive Hummers

CSI: Of Course

Real Life: No and they don't arrest or interview people.

Actually whether or not they arrest depends on the jurisdiction. Some police forces have CSIs who are police officers and would have power of arrest. IDK how often they'd arrest someone on a case they were working, but they'd be able to.
